Boise’s Beloved Basque Festival Returns

After a decade-long hiatus, one of Boise’s most anticipated cultural celebrations is finally making its return, and the city is buzzing with excitement. Jaialdi 2025, an international Basque festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors from around the world, will take place from July 29 to August 3, transforming Boise into a vibrant hub of music, dance, food, and tradition.
Jaialdi means “big festival” in Basque, and that’s exactly what it is. First held in 1987 as a one-time celebration of Basque culture, the festival’s enormous success led to a second installment in 1990 at the request of Idaho’s governor. Since then, it has grown into a cherished tradition, held every five years—though this year’s festival marks the first since 2015, after pandemic-related delays. Jaialdi is now one of the largest Basque festivals in the world, attracting upwards of 35,000 guests.
With events like Basque sports exhibitions (herri kirolak), street dances, live performances, and a delicious array of traditional Basque food and wine, Jaialdi offers a rare and authentic immersion into a culture that’s deeply embedded in Boise’s identity.
Boise's Deep Basque Roots
Many are surprised to learn that Boise is home to one of the largest Basque communities per capita in the United States. Basque immigrants began settling in the area in the late 19th century, drawn by work opportunities in Idaho’s thriving sheep industry. Their presence shaped the fabric of the city, both economically and culturally.
Today, the Basque Block in downtown Boise stands as a vibrant tribute to this heritage. Historic landmarks like the Basque Museum & Cultural Center, Bar Gernika, and the Cyrus Jacobs-Uberuaga House help preserve this unique legacy. Public art installations, lively gatherings, and authentic cuisine give both locals and visitors a chance to engage with a culture that remains proud and deeply rooted.
What to Expect at Jaialdi 2025
From free public events on the Basque Block to ticketed showcases at Idaho Central Arena and Expo Idaho, the week-long celebration offers something for everyone. Highlights include:
-
Sports Night (July 31): A thrilling exhibition of Basque athleticism with wood chopping, hay bale throwing, and more.
-
Street Dances: Lively music and traditional Basque folk-rock fill the streets on multiple nights.
-
Festara & Dantzaldi: Dynamic performances featuring the iconic Oinkari Basque Dancers and musical acts from the Basque Country.
-
Basque-ing at Expo Idaho: A family-friendly fair filled with food, dance, artisan vendors, and cultural demonstrations.
Savor chorizo and kalimotxos on the Basque Block, admire traditional costumes, and dance in the streets under the summer stars—Jaialdi is a reminder of Boise’s global ties and vibrant spirit.
Be Part of the Celebration
Jaialdi is powered by volunteers, and community involvement is central to its magic. Locals and visitors alike are encouraged to pitch in—from food booths to merchandise stands—and experience the camaraderie that makes this festival so special.
