There’s something about fall in Idaho that calls you, tempting you to get in the car and head for the mountains. There is a crispness to the air – a smell, a spark, a lightness, a feeling – that refreshes your soul as it fills your lungs. The light feels tangible. The sun is a golden kiss on your chilled cheeks after an early morning walk For whatever reason, perhaps because it comes and goes so quickly, this particular change of seasons is invigorating, mixed with a good ol’ dose of nostalgia. Golden aspens line familiar highways, sunrise & sunset skies take on new hues, and some of the state’s most beautiful destinations settle into a quieter rhythm before winter arrives.

For an Idaho getaway that brings together mountain towns, scenic drives, hiking, wildlife, great food and plenty of fall color, consider a road trip through three distinctly different destinations: McCall, Garden Valley, & Sun Valley.

Spend a weekend in one spot or take a week to visit all three. You don’t have to go far or be gone too long to get a taste of fall in the Idaho mountains.

McCall: Alpine Lakes & Mountain Color

About two hours north of Boise, McCall is an easy place to begin. Fall tends to arrive a little earlier at this elevation, transforming the forests surrounding Payette Lake into shades of yellow, orange and gold.

Start (& camp) at Ponderosa State Park. The peninsula extending into Payette Lake offers miles of trails through towering ponderosa pines and pockets of changing foliage. Cooler fall temperatures make this an ideal time for a morning hike or walk - we love the Huckleberry Loop for a longer hike that tours the perimeter with lake views.

Then take the scenic drive north toward Upper Payette Lake. It’s an easy excursion from McCall, winding through colorful forest before reaching the quieter alpine lake. On a calm day, the surrounding mountains and fall foliage reflect beautifully across the water.

Back in town, warm up over a cup of coffee or a delicious meal. Frenchie’s, My Father’s Place, Alpine Pantry and Provisions, & Foglifter Cafe are a few local options worth adding to the itinerary.

Garden Valley: Slow Down & Stay Awhile

From McCall, the road toward Garden Valley reveals another side of Idaho. Forested mountains transition into river canyons, rolling hills and broad views, making the drive one of our favorite parts of the getaway.

Book a cabin, bring something good to cook, spend an afternoon outside and enjoy the best kind of evening: clear skies with bright stars, crisp air and sounds of nature, and the relaxation that comes with having absolutely nothing on your agenda.

For an especially memorable stay, look for one of the area's more unusual vacation rentals. The Stargazer Cabin and Dome pairs a modern mountain cabin with a transparent sleeping dome designed for looking out at the surrounding landscape and night sky.

Ketchum & Sun Valley: Golden Aspens & Classic Idaho Scenery

Continue east toward Ketchum and Sun Valley for what may be the most dramatic fall scenery of the trip. Aspen groves turn brilliant shades of gold, cottonwoods change along the river corridors and the surrounding mountains provide a spectacular backdrop.

For an easy morning outside, head to the Wood River Trail. The paved pathway travels through the valley alongside stretches of the Big Wood River and is exceptionally beautiful when the surrounding trees begin to change.

Afterward, stop at Bigwood Bread Bakery & Café for breakfast or coffee before continuing south toward one of the region's true natural treasures: Silver Creek Preserve.

The preserve offers a distinctly different landscape from the mountains surrounding Sun Valley. Golden grasses, cottonwoods and clear spring-fed water create exceptional fall scenery, while the area is also known for abundant birdlife and wildlife.

Anglers can take the experience one step further with a guided afternoon of fly fishing on Silver Creek. Even for beginners, hiring a local guide offers an opportunity to experience the preserve while learning more about its ecosystem, history and renowned trout waters.

When to Go

As a general guide, late September through mid-October is a great window for this route. Higher-elevation destinations may begin changing earlier, while lower elevations can hold onto fall a little longer.
