Boise’s Highlands: Where the North End Meets the Foothills

Perched just above Boise’s beloved North End, the Highlands neighborhood offers a lifestyle that feels elevated, both literally and figuratively. Here, foothill living meets residential charm, surrounded by a setting that offers privacy, scenery, and the luxury of open space beyond your back door… while still being connected to community and a quick commute to many of Boise’s favorite amenities.

One of the Highlands’ greatest appeals is its location. Tucked into the base of the Boise Foothills, the neighborhood is close to Hyde Park’s dining and boutiques, Camel’s Back Park, and 10 minutes to downtown. At the same time, it feels distinctly removed – quieter, more spacious, and undeniably scenic.

The Homes

The Highlands is defined by its variety and sense of individuality. Larger lots, hillside settings, and thoughtful orientation allow many homes to capture sweeping foothill, valley, and sky views. Mid-century ranch homes sit comfortably alongside more classic estates with walk-out lower levels, while select newer enclaves introduce striking modern residences designed to embrace their surroundings.

From modest, well-loved homes to architectural statements with expansive glass and clean lines, the Highlands offers many properties tucked into the hillsides themselves, creating a feeling of retreat just minutes from the heart of the city.

The Lifestyle

Living here means living with direct access to the outdoors. Trailheads are woven seamlessly into daily life, beginning at the Harrison Hollow Trailhead at the base of the neighborhood. From here, residents enjoy dog off-leash trails, all-weather paths, and the option to connect into Boise’s extensive foothills trail system.

Bob’s Trail is another local favorite, linking hikers and bikers to miles of terrain that stretch deep into the foothills. It’s not uncommon to see neighbors heading out for an early-morning hike, an evening bike ride, or a casual sunset stroll – you’ll often bump into a few neighbors when you’re out on the trails.

When winter arrives, the Highlands becomes the gateway to mountain recreation. Bogus Basin is just 30 minutes away—close enough for spontaneous ski days and easy après-ski returns home.

The Amenities

Crane Creek Country Club adds another layer to Highlands living. While private membership is required, the club serves as a social cornerstone for many residents, offering golf, tennis, swimming, a full fitness facility, fine dining, live music, and a calendar filled with events.

Many people are drawn to the area for Highlands Elementary, a highly regarded neighborhood school that reinforces the community-oriented feel of the Highlands. \

The Highlands is also home to a collection of local spots that residents frequesnt and love:

  1. Bluffside Provisions – A neighborhood favorite for gourmet sandwiches and quality cuts of meat, locally owned and operated.

  2. Highlands Hollow Brew House  – A relaxed gathering spot known for craft beer and comfort-driven menus, with live music most weekends.

  3. Lulu’s Pizza & Sushi – A uniquely local pairing that makes casual dinners easy and fun – call ahead to order your sushi rolls or pick up a pizza to go, or stop in for a slice anytime.

  4. Mountain Timber Coffee – A go-to for expertly crafted coffee, muffins, and morning routines.

  5. Hawkins Pac-Out – A nostalgic drive-thru that’s been serving the area for decades. We recommend the burgers with a side of gems – and save room for a sip or two of their milkshake-of-the-month.

The Vibe

What defines the Highlands is its atmosphere. There’s a sense of openness here, created by the land, the views, and the way homes are thoughtfully spaced. It’s a neighborhood that feels calm and quiet, yet vibrant and connected. A place where luxury is defined not by flash, but by lifestyle: access to nature, architectural variety, established community, and the freedom to live a little more expansively.
