Connecting Neighborhoods and Nature: Boise’s Latest Park Projects
Has spring really sprung in Boise? This past weekend certainly had us excited for warm temps, blooming trees, and the return of outdoor living. The first few sun-filled days always remind us of why people fall in love with life here, and it feels like everyone is out and about for bike rides, yard projects, patio gatherings, and friendly conversations with neighbors.
Our city is truly something special, not just for its outdoor lifestyle, but for the intention behind it. Boise continues to invest in open space, preserve what matters, and create meaningful opportunities for residents to enjoy it.
As we step into one of the most anticipated times of year (hooray spring!) the city’s parks and open spaces are evolving in thoughtful and intentional ways, carefully expanded, creatively designed, and rooted in the same connection to nature that defines the Boise lifestyle.
This week, we’re sharing a few updates on some of the city’s latest investments:
A New Chapter for Simplot Hill
Tucked between the North End and Highlands, Simplot Hill has long existed as a quiet, understated expanse of open space, more known to locals than visitors. Residents have long appreciated its lush lawns, sweeping views, and proximity to popular neighborhoods.
Through the city’s “Treasure Open Space” master plan, this hillside will soon become home to Jack's Park, a carefully envisioned public space designed to enhance access while preserving the land’s natural character. Plans include expanded trail systems, intentional gathering areas for small community events, picnic spots, and scenic viewpoints that highlight the surrounding foothills and the valley below.
The goal is to elevate what already exists, creating a space that feels integrated, usable, and enduring. For nearby neighborhoods, it’s a meaningful addition. For the city as a whole, it’s a reflection of how Boise continues to grow with intention, prioritizing open space and quality of life alongside development.
Preserving a Downtown Classic
Closer to the heart of the city, the rose garden at Julia Davis Park is receiving thoughtful attention. Long considered one of Boise’s most beloved green spaces, the garden is being improved with a focus on long-term health, accessibility, and visitor experience.
Updates include pathway repairs, improved irrigation, and enhancements to garden beds, all designed to preserve the charm and familiarity of the space while ensuring it remains vibrant and welcoming for generations to come. It’s a subtle yet powerful reminder that Boise invests not just in new spaces, but in the ones that have long defined the city’s character.
Growing Something Even Bigger
Just beyond downtown, the Idaho Botanical Garden is entering Phase 1 of an exciting expansion. The project will introduce additional garden areas, enhanced educational facilities, and improved infrastructure to support year-round programming.
The gardens have also been officially named the permanent home of the Boise Farmer’s Market, which will go into effect once construction is complete, offering residents and visitors a vibrant, central hub for local food, crafts, and community connection. Already a cornerstone of Boise’s cultural and environmental identity, the garden is evolving into something even more dynamic, expanding both its reach and its role within the community.
New Opportunities at Expo Idaho
Over in Expo Idaho, plans are underway for a new park that will create additional recreational space along the river corridor. This park is designed to offer flexible green space, walking paths, and family-friendly amenities for both active play and quiet enjoyment.
It’s an exciting addition to an area that’s quickly becoming a hub for community activity and outdoor recreation, further expanding access to Boise’s signature open-space lifestyle in the north valley.
Looking Ahead to Summer
And as spring unfolds, there’s one date to note, Monday, March 30. That’s when Boise Parks & Recreation opens summer registration for residents.
The offerings are as robust as they are diverse, from neighborhood kids camps to mountain biking classes, art lessons, music programs, and educational enrichment courses for all ages. These programs are more than just activities, they’re an invitation to connect with the community, explore the outdoors, and engage in lifelong learning.
