Spring in the Treasure Valley tends to show up all at once. One week it’s cool mornings and bare branches, and the next, everything starts to turn… trees budding, lawns greening, and yards coming back to life.

It’s also the time of year when many homeowners start thinking about outdoor spaces again. Whether you’re planning to enjoy your yard through the summer or thinking ahead to resale, spring is the right time to make thoughtful updates that look good now and hold long-term value.

Here’s a practical guide to what works well in our climate, what’s worth prioritizing, and when to tackle it.

Where to Focus If You’re Thinking About Resale

Not all landscaping projects carry the same return. In Boise, buyers tend to respond most to outdoor spaces that feel clean, usable, and low-maintenance.

1. Start with the basics: clean-up and definition

Before adding anything new, focus on what’s already there:

  1. Fresh mulch in beds

  2. Defined edging along lawns and pathways

  3. Pruned trees and shrubs

  4. Removing overgrown or dead plantings

This alone can make a home feel more cared for, and often has more impact than adding new features.

2. Prioritize lawn health (but keep it realistic)

A green lawn still matters here, but it doesn’t need to be perfect. Even coverage, trimmed edges, and a healthy appearance go a long way. If your lawn struggles, consider blending in drought-tolerant areas rather than trying to force high water usage.

3. Add simple, intentional plantings

A few well-placed plants near the entry, along walkways, or in front beds create structure without overwhelming the space. Buyers tend to prefer landscaping that feels manageable.

4. Outdoor living > elaborate landscaping

In this market, usable space often matters more than intricate design.

Think: clean patio, space for seating, and designed zones for play and gathering.

What Grows Well in Boise’s Climate

Boise’s high desert climate means hot, dry summers and cooler winters—so plant choices matter. The best options tend to be drought-tolerant, hardy, and able to handle temperature swings.

Reliable perennials and shrubs:

  1. Lavender

  2. Salvia

  3. Coneflower (Echinacea)

  4. Black-eyed Susan

  5. Russian Sage

  6. Boxwood (for structure)

  7. Spirea

These come back year after year and require relatively low maintenance once established.

Spring and early summer color:

  1. Tulips and daffodils (early spring)

  2. Peonies (late spring, a local favorite)

  3. Allium

  4. Iris

These give seasonal color without requiring constant replanting.

Trees that do well locally:

  1. Maple varieties (Autumn Blaze is common)

  2. Honeylocust

  3. Serviceberry

  4. Flowering plum

If you’re adding trees, placement and scale matter more than quantity; one well-placed tree can transform a yard.

Timing: What to Do & When

Early Spring (March–April)

  1. Yard clean-up, pruning, and bed prep

  2. Lawn aeration and fertilizing

  3. Planting hardy perennials and shrubs

  4. Installing drip systems or checking irrigation

Mid to Late Spring (April–May)

  1. Planting flowers and adding color

  2. Refreshing mulch and finishing beds

  3. Starting container gardens or porch planters

  4. Seeding or repairing lawn areas

Early Summer (May–June)

  1. Transition to maintenance mode

  2. Adjust watering schedules as temperatures rise

  3. Replace anything that didn’t establish well
