Where to Find It, What Defines It & Why It Continues to Inspire

Boise is home to one of Idaho's most remarkable collections of Mid-Century architecture. Built during a period of tremendous growth throughout the 1950s, '60s and early '70s, these homes introduced a fresh approach to residential design, one centered on simplicity, functionality, abundant natural light, and an architectural connection to the outdoors.

While Mid-Century Modern is often associated with destinations like Palm Springs or Southern California, Boise developed its own distinctive interpretation. Here, architects and builders embraced the region's foothills, mature landscapes, natural materials, and expansive views. More than half a century later, these residences remain among the city's most admired, and their influence can still be seen in many of today's most desirable custom homes.

What Defines Mid-Century Architecture?

Although the term "Mid-Century" is often used broadly, Boise's homes from this era generally fall into three closely related styles.

  • Mid-Century Modern homes are known for their clean lines, open floor plans, expansive windows, low-pitched rooflines, and strong connection to outdoor living. Natural materials such as wood, stone and brick create warmth while maintaining a refined simplicity.
  • Mid-Century Ranch homes became especially popular as Boise expanded during the post-war years. Characterized by long, horizontal profiles, one-story living, large picture windows and practical layouts, these homes continue to appeal for their comfort, livability and distinctive character.
  • Northwest Contemporary architecture emerged as many homes were built into the Boise Foothills. Vaulted wood ceilings, dramatic rooflines, cedar siding, exposed beams and walls of glass were thoughtfully designed to embrace the surrounding landscape and maximize natural light. While distinctly Northwestern in character, these homes share many of the principles that define Mid-Century design.

Rather than fitting neatly into one category, many of Boise's most memorable homes blend elements of all three styles, creating architecture that is authentic to both its era and its setting.

Where to Find Boise's Mid-Century Homes

One of the reasons Mid-Century architecture remains so beloved in Boise is the variety of neighborhoods where it can be found. Each offers its own interpretation of the style while reflecting the beauty of its surroundings.

The Highlands

Developed beginning in the late 1950s, the Highlands became one of Boise's premier neighborhoods for custom-designed homes. Winding streets, generous homesites and sweeping foothill views inspired architects to create residences that embraced the natural landscape. Ranch homes, Mid-Century Modern designs and Northwest Contemporary architecture all coexist here, making the Highlands one of Boise's most desirable destinations for buyers seeking distinctive homes with architectural character.

The Boise Bench

The Bench contains one of the city's largest collections of Mid-Century homes, particularly ranch-style residences built during Boise's rapid post-war growth. Wide streets, mature trees and spacious lots continue to make these neighborhoods attractive to homeowners today. Many have been thoughtfully renovated, blending original architectural details with modern updates while preserving the character that makes these homes so appealing.

Warm Springs & East Boise

Nestled between the Boise River and the foothills, Warm Springs and surrounding East Boise neighborhoods feature a wonderful collection of architect-designed homes that embrace their natural surroundings. Large windows, hillside settings and thoughtfully integrated outdoor spaces create homes that feel connected to the landscape while showcasing many of Mid-Century architecture's defining principles.

Hidden Gems Throughout the City

Mid-Century homes can also be found throughout the North End, Lower Highlands and other established neighborhoods. While these areas may be better known for historic or traditional architecture, tucked among the tree-lined streets are remarkable examples of Mid-Century design waiting to be discovered.

One of Idaho's most extraordinary works of art, this Landmark-designated home was designed circa 1958 by acclaimed Idaho architect Art Troutner. His design, a bold regional evolution of Mid-Century Modernism infused with the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright, used wood, stone, metal, and glass to create spaces that appear to have grown from the land itself. With its 360-degree views, this house is perhaps his finest. Flagstone floors run out to the terraces beyond; fir ceilings and integrated lighting warm the rooms beneath them. The kitchen has been opened to the views, with custom teak cabinetry, waterfall-edge quartzite countertops, and professional-grade appliances. At the heart of the home, the living room rises to soaring wood-clad ceilings; a striking suspension fireplace anchors the space, and the city stretches out beyond the glass. The primary suite offers custom woodwork and a luxurious bath wrapped in marble and glass. Additional bedrooms, bathrooms, an office, and a separate living space occupy a second wing. Set on 1.21 acres backing to protected open land, the grounds feel boundless yet remain just minutes from downtown, with terraces, mature trees, a pool with panoramic sunset views, and spaces designed for quiet reflection or open-air gatherings.
