Boise has once again been celebrated as one of the nation’s most desirable cities to call home, this time earning recognition as a top retirement spot thanks to its unique balance of affordability, community spirit, and quality of life.

One of the city’s biggest draws is its cost of living, about 7.3% below the U.S. average, helping retirees make the most of fixed incomes. Healthcare costs for senior couples average around $366,449 over a lifetime, which is lower than the national norm. Housing remains relatively attainable, with median home prices just above $500,000, offering solid value for the amenities Boise provides. Idaho’s tax structure adds further appeal: Social Security benefits aren’t taxed, pension taxes are modest, and there’s no estate, gift, or inheritance tax.

Beyond the numbers, Boise offers a vibrant lifestyle in a warm, close-knit community. As a bustling college town with only about 11% of residents aged 65 and older, it enjoys a healthy generational mix. Cultural life is rich and varied, with venues like Boise State’s Morrison Center, the Botanical Garden’s Outlaw Field, Boise Contemporary Theatre, and the historic Egyptian Theatre. Outdoor enthusiasts have the Boise River Greenbelt at their doorstep—a 25-mile scenic trail perfect for biking, hiking, and river activities—not to mention our city’s extensive trail system, commitment to public parks, and Bogus Basin, Boise’s fabulous non-profit ski resort.

While housing here may not be cheaper than in every city, Boise delivers exceptional overall value compared to similar-sized metros, thanks to its quality of life. Seniors can also find resources for subsidized housing if eligible, along with more than 40 assisted-living facilities in the area.

In short, Boise combines affordability, favorable tax advantages, accessible healthcare, cultural richness, and abundant outdoor recreation, all set within a welcoming, walkable college-town atmosphere. It’s no wonder this city continues to rank among the best places in the country to retire... and it's our favorite place to live, connect, and explore, too, regardless of how many years we have until retirement!
