As summer winds down, Boise’s skies come alive with color and wonder during the Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic, a treasured tradition now in its 34th year. Each Labor Day Weekend, this beloved festival fills the valley with breathtaking balloon launches, festive family activities, and the glow of community spirit.

There is something undeniably magical about watching the balloons lift off against the backdrop of Boise’s beautiful foothills. From afar, the sight is awe-inspiring, but up close, you begin to truly appreciate their sheer size, color, and artistry. Every design tells a story, creating a floating gallery of Boise’s personality and charm.

While Ann Morrison Park is the heart of the festival, with morning launches between 7:15 and 9 a.m. and evening celebrations like Friday’s Nite Glow Spectacular, part of the fun is finding your own vantage point. Balloons often drift across town, giving neighborhoods unexpected front-row seats. North End residents are treated to close encounters as balloons descend gracefully overhead, while those perched in the foothills or along the Bench can enjoy a wide-angle view of the sky sprinkled with color.

The week begins with CapEd Kid’s Day on Wednesday, when children can experience tethered balloon rides and meet pilots face-to-face. Media Day follows on Thursday, and Friday brings one of the festival’s most anticipated highlights: a morning launch followed by an evening of live music, food, and the breathtaking Nite Glow, when balloons light up the night in unison. The celebration continues through Sunday with more morning flights and concludes with the magical Dawn Patrol finale.

To make the most of your visit, here are some helpful pointers provided by the event organizers. More can be found on the Spirit of Boise website (HERE)

  1. Arrive early to secure a good view and avoid limited parking—Ann Morrison Park often closes to through traffic between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. during launch days.

  2. Dress in layers and bring something waterproof—morning dew and cooler temps are common.

  3. Leave pets at home—balloon burners emit high-pitched noises that can distress animals.

  4. Don’t be shy—pilots are often happy to pose for photos, but always ask first.

This festival isn’t merely a visual spectacle; it’s a celebration of community, creativity, and the joy of flight. This tradition promises memories that will lift your spirit—we hope to see you there!
